Muncie’s Nick Speidel scored his record tying fifth feature win of the year on Friday night when the Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Jenmarco.com three-quarter midgets competed at the Gas City I-69 Speedway in Gas City, Ind.
Speidel, who is looking to unseat four-time and defending MTQRL Champion Tate Martz for the 2013 title, rebounded from a disastrous race two weeks ago at the Shelby County Fairgrounds when his car would not fire and he was unable to start the feature.
Speidel stormed to the lead in the first heat race to win his sixth Perfect North Slopes Heat of the year over Cody Kiewitt and Chad Hankins. Martz looked to keep pace with Speidel in the second and final heat but came up short as Logan Arnold took the win over Martz and Matt Hedrick.
The ever important redraw was next up for Speidel and it was the only thing he would lose on this night. Speidel’s draw of 2-3-1 would relegate him to a fifth place starting position while his nemesis Martz would start on the front row beside Elwood Sanitarium Haunted Attraction Polesitter Kiewitt.
When MTQRL starter Steve Motz waived the green flag to start the twenty lap feature Martz jumped out to the lead over Kiewitt. Martz would hold the point until lap eleven when Speidel would make the pass and go on to lead the final ten circuits to win the thirteenth MTQRL feature of his career. Martz would claim second place over a hard charging Brett Hankins, Kiewitt and Hedrick. Kevin Blue, Chad Hankins, Robbie Roland, Bobby Walton and Kyle May rounded out the top ten.
Chris Mann was unable to start the feature and received $50 as the Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver and his son and car owner, Blake, won the $50 Jackson Oil & Solvents gift certificate.
The Indy Race Parts Hard Charger was Brett Hankins whose run from fifteenth to third earned him $20 off $100 spent at Indy Race Parts. Logan Arnold dropped out of the feature on lap two and by virtue of his sixteenth place finish his car owners and parents, Kevin and Angie, received a $50 gift certificate from American Racer Tires.
Kiewitt received two t-shirts and tickets to the Elwood Sanitarium Haunted Attraction for starting on the pole of the feature and Speidel and Arnold each received a pair of tubing passes to Perfect North Slopes for their heat race wins.
Saturday’s race at the Montpelier Motor Speedway was cancelled due to heavy rain leaving just three races remaining on the MTQRL schedule. The next event will be September 7th when the MTQRL makes their final appearance of the season at the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Shelbyville, Ind. Along with the MTQRL TQ midgets the 600cc non wing sidewinders will be on the card with racing set to start at 7:30 pm.
